With California’s June 2 primary results still being tallied, former reality TV personality Spencer Pratt holds a narrow lead over City Council member Nithya Raman for the second spot in Los Angeles’ November mayoral runoff against incumbent Karen Bass.
Bass, a Democrat, failed to secure the 51% threshold needed to win outright in the crowded race, triggering a general election runoff. Election officials say counting all ballots could take weeks to complete.
As of Thursday morning, with roughly 62% of votes counted, Pratt held 29.9% of the vote compared to Raman’s 22.8%, according to the New York Times. Bass led with 35% of votes cast.
Raman faces a significant deficit with many ballots still uncounted throughout Los Angeles County. Mail-in ballots and provisional votes continue to be processed, leaving the final outcome uncertain.
A Republican has not won the Los Angeles mayoral office in more than 30 years, though Pratt’s performance has surprised political observers. His support appears driven by voter concerns over crime, homelessness, and the city’s business climate.
John Putnam, a business leader and former city council candidate, said voters are frustrated with Democratic leadership and drawn to Pratt’s straightforward messaging. “I think a lot of people are concerned about what’s happening, they really don’t know how to fix this, and I think the crime, the homelessness, the addiction” are driving his appeal, Putnam said.
Pratt filed a formal complaint alleging Bass violated California election law by campaigning near a ballot box. Under state law, electioneering within 100 feet of a ballot drop box is prohibited.
Pratt posted on social media Tuesday accusing Bass of recording herself violating the statute. “Electioneering within 100 feet of a ballot box is AGAINST THE LAW,” Pratt wrote, claiming the incident demonstrated a disregard for democratic rules.
Bass’s campaign disputed the complaint and questioned Pratt’s credibility, according to her spokesperson. The allegation centers on a campaign video that appeared to show Bass near a ballot location.
