California Teacher Removed After Controversial Flag Comments

Kristin Pitzen, a teacher at Newport Mesa School District in Orange County, California, was removed from her classroom after posting TikTok videos that many viewed as mocking the U.S. flag and promoting a personal agenda.

In a now-deleted video, Pitzen said she removed the American flag from her classroom because it made her feel “uncomfortable.” Laughing, she added that during the Pledge of Allegiance, students could stand or not, and one student asked what to look at in place of the flag. Pitzen pointed to a pride flag hanging on the wall.

In another video, Pitzen showcased her pride-themed classroom, declaring, “I pledge allegiance to the queers,” and offering support to LGBTQ+ students. While she intended to foster inclusivity, many parents and community members saw her actions as disrespectful to the national flag and military service members.
