Trump to Rebrand Pentagon as ‘Department of War’ in Controversial Executive Order
Donald Trump is set to rebrand the United States Department of Defense as the “Department of War” following the signing of a new executive order, the White House has confirmed.
The move will introduce the historical title as an officially sanctioned secondary name for the department, allowing it to be used in formal documents, military ceremonies, and other federal functions. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will also be permitted to use the title “Secretary of War” in his official capacity.
The change, while not a permanent renaming, marks a significant symbolic shift in how the Trump administration presents the role and function of the U.S. military. A full legal renaming of the department would still require Congressional approval.
