I never imagined a stranger in a café could unravel my entire life. But three hours, a dazzling smile, and \$500 nearly did.

Six months ago, my life was stable: a marketing job, modest apartment, and a routine built around two goals—career advancement and caring for my mom. Love could wait; stability couldn’t.

While reading at my usual café, a woman sat across from me. “Hi, I’m Meredith. Want \$500 to pretend to be my boyfriend for three hours?”

She needed a stand-in to appease her traditional father. I hesitated—but the money could cover two months of Mom’s therapy. I agreed.

We headed to the restaurant. I rehearsed fake details. Then I saw her father—David. My boss. The CEO. The man hinting at my promotion.

Dinner blurred into corporate small talk and veiled threats. “Hurt my daughter,” David said, “and you’ll never work in this industry again.”

“Too late. You’re leverage,” she said. “Back out, and I’ll say you harassed me.”

What she didn’t know? I recorded everything.
