US President Donald Trump has left many Americans baffled after making an unusual speech in which he claimed to know more about grass than “any human being in the world.” The remarks, delivered while he spoke about plans to redevelop Washington DC’s parks, have sparked widespread commentary online, with many questioning whether the president was joking, exaggerating, or genuinely serious.

Speaking to reporters earlier this week, Trump positioned himself as an authority on the subject of lawns and turf, citing his experience owning golf courses across the United States. “One of the things we’re going to be redoing is your parks,” Trump said. “I have a lot of golf courses all over the place. I know more about grass than any human being, I think, anywhere in the world.”

He went on to add that grass “has a life” and that the grass in Washington “died about 40 years ago.” While his comments were not entirely clear in context, the president appeared to be linking his vision for restoring parks to his past experiences with maintaining golf courses.

The speech quickly spread online, with many taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express disbelief. A post from the activist account Call to Activism highlighting Trump’s comments attracted more than 12,000 responses in a matter of hours. “Grass has a life. We have a life, and grass has a life. The grass here died about 40 years ago,” the post quoted Trump as saying, before asking: “Has Trump completely lost his mind?”
