Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence in the Trump administration, announced her resignation Friday to care for her husband who is battling a rare form of bone cancer.

Gabbard shared her resignation letter on social media, stating that her husband Abraham had recently received a diagnosis of an extremely rare bone cancer. She said the diagnosis required her to step away from her role to support him through treatment in the coming weeks and months.

In her formal letter to President Donald Trump, Gabbard wrote, “I am deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me and for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for the last year and a half.” She noted that her husband faces “major challenges in the coming weeks and months” ahead.

Gabbard informed President Trump of her decision before publicly announcing the resignation Friday. Her last day in the position is set for June 30.

The resignation marks another departure from the Trump administration’s senior leadership ranks. Gabbard had served as the Director of National Intelligence since her confirmation by the Senate.

The administration will need to identify a successor to lead the intelligence agency. Gabbard’s departure follows other high-profile exits from the Trump administration in recent months.
